A softening of stand by Tata Steel following protest by local people over its move to acquire 12,000 acre of land for its proposed titanium dioxide plant near Tuticorin. The company is now willing to consider returning the land to the people after the mining process. The company''s original plan was to develop agro industries on its own in this area. Tata steel also claims only desalinated water will be used for mining and there will be no seepage of sea water as the proposed project is over 12 kilometre away from the shore.
Around 90 per cent of the soil is to be put back, enriched and made fit for cultivation. Following strong opposition led by AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa, actor Sarath Kumar and its own ally the PMK, the DMK government has decided to seek public opinion first before a final decision. For Tata Steel this offer is perhap''s a last ditch attempt to salvage a project that has been jinxed for the last seven years.
