Mumbai, 1 Oct, 2007: Home entertainment player Moser Baer has clinched a deal with Ultra Videos to acquire the latter’s entire movie library, including some of Bollywood’s biggest blockbusters such as Sholay and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. Moser Baer pipped competition from the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani group to clinch the deal for about Rs 50-70 crore, people familiar with the matter said.
The deal instantly gives Moser Baer ownership of 700 Hindi film titles, and 300 regional and English-dubbed titles. With Moser Baer now having the leading market share, and going all out with its aggressive pricing strategy, established players such as Shemaroo may have to rejig their strategies.
About 25-30 titles and recent movie releases are still with Ultra and therefore not a part of this deal. Company executives said that Ultra wants to first exploit the titles and would later consider selling them on an individual basis. Harish Dayani, CEO, Moser Baer Entertainment, offered no comments while Ultra Video managing director Sushilkumar Agrawal could not be contacted despite numerous attempts. Moser Baer, which has revolutionised the home entertainment market with its ultra-low price strategy, now has a whopping 2,500 titles under its belt, thanks to this acquisition. The only other big player now left in the home entertainment segment is Shemaroo.
