From steel to software, the Tata Group has made a presence for itself in all fields. Now it is looking to expand its business in the pharma sector where it has already established somewhat of a presence. The group also has some ambitious plans for its chemicals business. Tata Chemicals is increasing the work it does with farmers like distributing fertilisers, doling out soil advice and ensuring farmers get a fair price at the wholesale level.
The company hopes such steps would help it reap a turnover of Rs 1000 crore from this venture going ahead. Earlier this year, Tata Chemicals and Total Produce formed a joint venture with the objective to create state-of-the-art distribution facilities for fresh fruit and vegetables across India by leveraging the individual strengths of both partners.
The logical question is whether this joint venture namely Khat Se will look at retail sales also, something the company rules out. At least for the moment this is not all on the plate of the Tata Group, which is foraying in a big way into the pharma business. The company''s research centre in bangalore hopes to expand from 110 researchers to 260 in the next couple of months, which will complement an already existing centre in Pune in drug discovery and development.
