Thiruvananthapuram: National Insurance Company has rolled out two new low-premium products, Gramin Swasthya Insurance and Gramin Suraksha Insurance, aimed at the welfare and inclusive growth of the economically backward. The Centre has directed the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) to permit non-government organisations, selfhelp groups and micro finance institutions to act as micro insurance agents. This is expected to help the speedy implementation of the schemes to benefit the entire rural population, the source said. As per the Micro Finance (IRDA) Regulations, 2005, NGOs, SHGs, and MFIs are eligible to act as micro insurance agents in rural and urban areas by a simple enrolling process without any registration fee.
