Avesthagen Ltd has declared the launch of eco-friendly, biodegradable plastic made of cereals in the country in an alliance with Limagrain, its French collaborator. India''s first 100 per cent biodegradable plastic. Details of the products or Avesthagen''s role in the bio-plastic venture were not immediately available. The innovative biodegradable plastic is India''s first product targeted to restrict white pollution and the hazards of environmental pollution. Avesthagen will continue the work to launch more environment friendly products. Alternative biodegradable materials are the need of the hour, with an annual usage of over 150 million tons of non-degradable plastic. Bioplastics are used from medical implants and drug delivery devices to disposable nappies and plant pots; however, the cost of developing them can be 2-10 times that of the familiar plastic- which also uses up precious non-renewable resources like petroleum.
